158 Alcester Road South

My parents came back from Germany separately (my mother couldn’t travel because she was pregnant with my brother at the time) and re-settled in Kilmarnock. Unfortunately, Scotland proved too cold for my mother and they decided to re-settle in England. Eventually we ended up in Birmingham at 158 Alcester Road South.

In my grandmother’s later years, she had a stroke and left Glasgow to come and live with us.

She had a big room upstairs and whenever I came home she’d call downstairs:

“Christine… would you bring me a small ‘tate’ of water?”

Not wanting to be at her beck and call all evening, I’d fill a big glass and bring her a big ‘tate’ of water!
