My parents meet

My mother was born in Glasgow and my father in Fairlie. They met at Glasgow university and later lived in Kilmarnock.

My father always had a keen interest in culture, particularly literature,  and became editor of the union magazine at Glasgow University. My mother was working as a typist on the Glasgow Herald when they met.

Mum used to go to the dances at the university. Dad, as part of the student union, used to collect the ticket money. He used to wear a tatty old jumper (once they were married mum took it outside and burnt it). One week, mum went to the local tea shop and dad was there, peering over his newspaper at her. When she got up to go he invited her to have a cup of tea (what a chat up line) which she accepted.
