My father, Dr William Cunningham, was born in Fairlie, in Ayrshire on October 10th 1914, but raised in Kilmarnock. His parents were Alexander Reid Cunningham, a Head teacher, and his wife, Caroline Gordon McGregor (Cunningham). He was the middle child of three, having a younger (“Lena”, short for Carolina) and an older sister (“Sheena, Gaelic for Jane), who both became Domestic Science teachers. I don’t think my father was able to choose his own career because from a very early age his mother was telling people that William (Bill) was going to be a Doctor!
When he was young his father would take him for a walk every night after the evening meal. Bill would always ask his father to tell him a story and his father’s stories narrated the history of Scotland.
